Day 7 , The best of Moville and Donegal so far...

These are some of my favorite Moville pics:

The Foggy view towards the Foyle from Breahead House.

A tree in the Derry City Graveyard...

(I thought it was going to tell me not to touch
the apples and then start throwing them at me...)

From Moville Quay (pronounced: "Key")
looking North at Lough Foyle.

Looking South towards Derry.

~
I met an Angel named "Michael" on the Quay at Moville... ...tell you all about later... working on a poem that I had to get up to write last night at about 3 am...
~

From "Gianan of Aileach" the Ruins of the O'Neil's Fortress
damaged by Murtagh O'Brien in the 12th Century
looking towards Donegal, in the direction of "Ballyarr."

Gotta EAT something now after a the stop at Bushmills....

Day 6, Running behind on my Posts...

Well,
Here we are in the "Lime Tree" again, eating and drinking, and absorbing an incredible day!
Unfortunately todays Pic's will have to wait until we get back to a second outlet so I can load them on to the Computer.

Here is a Pic from our last morning at Greenmount Lodge:

My feet are in the frame so you can see I am actually "Walking the Sod!"

~

After Greenmount we stopped at Lough Neagh
to see the Ardboe Cross.

~
At the Beaghmore stones I decided to walk deep into the Bog to get just the right pic, It was worth it but I managed to illustrate the phrase "Bogged Down." in the process...

Landscape from deep in the Bog.

Day 4 ...This has been everything I could ever have hoped for and more!

We have found that Internet connections can be few and far between ....

We are sitting in a pub named "The Lime Tree Bar" in the Tower Hotel on "The Diamond" and I have purchased a 1 Day pass for about 8.00 GBP = 13.7362 USD.

Steve and Richard are eating and I am blogging...

~

I sent this out as a Virtual Post the other night.
(...somehow I doubt they realize what
the word "Hump" means in Amerikay...")

Because of the unreliable prospects of the next time I might be able to blog I am skipping to today and keeping this short.

~

At the Beaghmore Stone Circles... I just couldn't resist....

I got some GREAT Video too!

~

This is Steve's Silly Ireland Picture.
You have to have at least one.

Richard and I at Brackfield Brawn adjacent to
the Cumber Presbyterian Church Last night when we arrived.

Where we attended worship today! It was their yearly traditional harvest service. Afterwards we went back to Alan McKinney's for wonderful lunch provided by his lovely wife Anna. We had "Great Craic!"

Afterwards, we "Walked the Sod." We found all of the info I needed at the Ulster Migration Center yesterday the matched up with my Griffith's data so we were able to pin point the location of the Gilmour's tenancy!!!!

I have Copies of the Maps and pictures but I have not yet loaded them into the Computer so I can post them.

However! I can say that in the Church of the Trinity I found one headstone that confirms and expands the Glenn genealogy! (Barb, Kay, I am going to do a Rubbing so I can bring it back.) It takes us back to 1888 and leads me to believe that Alexander Gilmour met Jane Glenn while he was a Prentice Cooper and working at the Glebe.

~

I did manage to get these 2 shots last night with the Harvest Moon! Click on them to inlarge for full effect!

The Cumber Parish, Trinity Church with a graveyard filled
with Jane Glenn's Mother, Father, Brother James and....

Check out the Sunset reflection in the sign....
~

"I've to bed soon." ...it was a very busy relaxing day.

This has been everything I could ever have hoped for and more! We found the "Scribe Tree", the old "Iron Bridge" (...I was Lead there by The Higher Power!) I stepped in cowflop and never even noticed! We determined from the maps that the Glenn's and Gilmour's lived across the street from each other. We learned that you pronounce the River Faughan with allot of spit as if you're clearing your throat. Cover the Kids ears now! (...it sounds much like "River F**KEN") We finished up at "Robert Knobbs Pub" ...authentic Ulster Pub: Peat Fire and etc.... (...complete with young underage drinkers and MTV.... you can't have everything...)

~

THANK-YOU Alan and Anna! Steve, Richard and I will be talking about today for some time to come. This was defiantly Craic!

Day 1 ...the invasion of the Boyne...

First Day:

...Got lost several times.... Drove around Airport area a couple of times. Maps don't match up very well with the GPS.... ...Had some really awesome Donuts at a Petrol Station while getting directions. Almost got creamed while making a "U"wee as per the GPS in Dublin...

AHHHH! I'll never do that again!!!!

~

...Saw the "Bru na Boinne" and "Knowth" Burial Chamber's AKA: (New Grange) on the way to our first nights lodging near Omagh Yesterday. Steve's people are from this area and it is quite possible that they may have had some part in it's history and incarnations from the Neolithic times upto and including the 1800s.

VERY OLD AND VERY COOL!

Bru na Boinne AKA: New Grange.

Some of you who work with me may recognize the "Whorls" from
the design's that I draw in the ashtrays in the kitty litter
after I am done cleaning them...
(I'm not there so I'm not doing that now....)

Inside the tomb at "Knowth".
No pictures were allowed in "Bru na Boinne"
or I would have taken some pictures of the
Carved in Stone Graffiti from the 1840's.
~
("...you gotta be really serious about your Graffiti
if your gonna do it with a chisel!")
~
(...I was looking for Steve's
ancestral names the "Quinlan's"
but alas it was dark and he ran out
when they turned the lights out...)

(...not...)
(...just kidding...)

This is my brother Richard on top of the Knowth Site.

The (3) "Bru na Boinne" Sites are located in a triangle
inside an oxbow on the River Boyne.
(...Yes bIRD, here is your "Water Source" at the Sacred Place...)
(We didn't visit the third site ("Dowth")
as we didn't have enough time...)

"Would you look at that! ...its a Real Irish bIRD!"

It was hard to find our way out of there as you can see...
(...I thought the sign said Far Out! )

~

Went to a Tower outside of Kells that was basically a crumbled mass in a cow field. I had to climb a Stone hedgerow to see it. I guess for illustrative purposes I should have taken a picture any way...

...and then Steve and Rich could have taken pictures of me trying to get down... The thing was at least 6" tall....

("...we drove around an hour looking this what?")

~

YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE
WHAT I FOUND IN KELLS!

....I may be able to find employment here yet....

"Ah, yeah, my name is really "Derril", and this is my
"other brother from another Mother..."
...Larry, ...Larry O'Brien..."

~

After we lost our way in the Kells area, we headed north: It took several hours in the Rain, on the left hand side of the road, with BIGASS TRUCKs coming at us encroaching on OUR SPACE! ...I had the window down to help defog cause we didn't think we would need a car with Air conditioning,at one point and, well, ...there is NO SHOULDER!

...so a branch came WHACK into the car!

It was dark and I couldn't find the window button to close it either!

DRIVING LIKE THIS IS VERY SCARY!!!

The GPS is only good in Ireland not Northern Ireland as it is UK and not part of the software Richard purchased!

...and now that we're in UK the speedometer doesn't match!

(...I will Post pictures of the hedgerows and how close they are to the road tomorrow...)

The Gage is Kilometers, Speed is in miles, AND WE SUCK AT MATH!

...especially at high speeds!

~

BELIEVE IT OR NOT! We arrived safely!

I would blog about our time today in Strabane but blogger is being a weenie and we need some sleep....

LOVE YOU ALL!

I didn't get up until almost 1 today. I was up until almost 1 last night, but I wasn't packing or doing the things I should have been either. I just couldn't put down "An Irish Country Village" by Patrick Taylor. It's the sequel to "An Irish Country Doctor". If you haven't yet read them you should.

This is how I spent the day:
  • I gathered stuff from my safe: Passport & etc.
  • Entered some E-mails to my Virtual Post Card List.
  • Talked to my Boss/Landlord about my Kids doing the Laundromat while I am gone; allaying his fears.
  • Had Breakfast and conversation with Benevolent Bird.
  • Entered some E-mails to my Virtual Post Card List.
  • Went to Wally World and bought some throw-away "Old Fart" Velcro sneakers and put Gel inserts in them. They should go nicely with my "Old Lady Support Hose Stockings...
  • Entered some E-mails to my Virtual Post Card List.
  • Walked and Fed the "Deut".
  • Entered some E-mails to my Virtual Post Card List.
  • Drove saraH to work and I went to the Post Office and picked up the mail, when I got back to the car I opened up a card from my 3rd Cousin Barb and cried spontaneously!
The envelope contained a laminated Irish Blessing that went straight into my otherwise empty wallet and will remain there always. Thank-you Barb! I needed a "Good Cry!"
  • Blogged
  • Cram for Bible Study.

...off to Bible Study!

"Re" yesterday's blog...

Panic averted:

Devo came home and we determined what was wrong with the charger. It was wired wrong! ...an Hour and 20 Minutes later we had it rewired, re-hot-glued and the Batteries were recharged. Crisis solved by my "Magic-Kid!"

3 Days left: Panic sets in...

Steve and I drove out to my Dad's Grave today after Church to do an intro Video for our trip. Richard wasn't feeling well so he stayed home. That was about 11:30 this morning; it's now going for 3:00 p.m. Here's the thing, I was assuming that I knew what I was doing and had followed all the directions translated from the manufacturer from Chinese into "Ingrish". I thought I had figured out all the backwards grammar and conditioned all the batteries. Turns out it didn't work.

Let me give you an example: "Pecial to charge design of way of going back, to excessive discharge or is it use and lead to the fact voltage not to pass the low battery to put for a long time, can still start and charge normally."

WTF?
I MEAN: WTF?!!!

So we are going to go back later this evening and try it again after I try to recharge the Old Battery with my Camera Dock. I bought 2 "NEW" Batteries and a Charger SO I WOULDN'T have to drag the Dock along....

I guess I'm "Tied to the Dock..." (...yes I do realize the Poetic Justice of that statement...)

Again, the Lord sent me out in the field and "made me to fail" before I got to Ireland and then realized the expensive cheep piece-o'-x@#+!!! didn't work.

(was that last statement a ironic contradiction or what?)

[Expensive=Cheep]

...I think I'll call that an "Oxy-ironical-ism"...

So, yeah: "Practice, Practice, Practice."

Work out the "Chinese Bug's"

...or you may end up wasting one" houror" more....

...only 4 Days to GO Time!

I'm done with my last day of work before going. I gathered a list of E-mail addresses today for "Virtual Post Cards" I figure if I send regular posts home from Ireland I'll be back before most of them. This way they will be "As it Happens" so to speak. I intend to blog also when I can. I'm thinking that My Videos will be edited and uploaded when I return as the idea of paying for "By-the-minute" to upload them will likely not be cost effective.

It was a long day at work; I'm going to Clean the Laundromat and hit the sack so I'm fresh for Church in th A.M. I'll build the Group Mailing lists tomorrow after Service. Richard, Steve and I are going to do some "prep stuff" in the afternoon that I will explain about at a later date.

Hey! I just looked at the 5 day forecast and things are looking good at least for the first couple of days! If anyone is interested here is the BBC link ...

Omagh by the way, is the Town in County Tyrone we are staying in for the first few days so we can visit the Center for Migration Studies and the Ulster Heritage Park. We are going to see if we can locate the actual plot of ground where the Gilmour's Cooperage stood based on our Griffith's Data. You pronounce it: "Oh-Ma".

~

Yesterday I received an E-mail out of the blue filled with potentially important information from a Gilmour descendant who has been there and done what we are about to embark upon...We will as a result, be more than likely making a detour to Belfast.

~

Bags are being packed!

....and days are being counted!

The Lord's way of paving the way to Ireland!

14 days, 7 hours and 10 minutes to take off!

...but who's counting...

I don't know how it happened but all the decks have been cleared.

Everything that needed to be resolved in some way that I can live with, has somehow taken care of itself.

(...well almost everything... ...yeah, there are some things that I won't discuss here I intend to sort out at a later date, but nothing pressing or pressuring...)

The only things I have to do between now and then is pack, organize and count the days!

Thank-you Lord!

P.S.:

I did what the Doctor ordered. I bought $40.00 "Orthopedic Support Hose".

Alright, alright, I know they remind me of my Grandmother, and I kinda feel alittle girlie when I put them on, but there is a history of blood clots in the family and the last thing I want is to spend time in a hospital when I finally get to Ireland after waiting all my life to go! Word is that for every hour in the air, I have to ware them a comparable hour on the ground when I land. That of course means that I will be waring "hose" for close to 24 hours. Under my jeans of course so no-one will notice. ;)

...the secrets out now!

P.S., P.S.: ...Please don't forget to vote in the "What should we name Our Micro-Beer Poll! Just click a radio button at random if you can't make up your mind. Only 27 days left to vote!

"Don't worry, I've got plans..."

This summer my son Devin decided to try his hand at keeping Bee's. From one hive he yielded 20 - 20oz. jars of Honey. About 30 lbs of golden raw Honey!

"What were we going to do with all this Honey?"
I said...

"Don't worry, I've got plans..."
was what he said back to me.

Last week he came home with a beer making kit. The next thing I know my kitchen is being taken over... We are now in the process of making "Honey-Ale" and "Honey-Mead".

"O.K." I said, "If you're going to use my kitchen as a Micro Brewery, I am going to get something in return...."

"Huh?"
He said.
"In return for the use of my kitchen, well, obviously I get some of the yield right?"

"Yeah, sure thats a given."
he said.
"Well I also want to Name the Beer and design the Label too!"

"Ahh, sure alright..."

~~

So here are some of the names that have been suggested so far:

1- Jolly Janitor Honey Ale.
2- Unemployed Super Hero Ale.
3- Tired Irish Poet Honey-Ale.
4- Ol' Watershed Brew.
5- Perious Frink's Honey Drink.
6- Ugly Puppy Honey-Ale.
7- Devolutionary Honey-Beer.
8- Rabid Octopus Honey-Ale.
9- Retired Grocery Clerk Honey-Ale.
10- Girlie-Girl Honey-Beer.
11- Deaf bookkeepers Honey-Brew.
12- Belching Beauty Queen Honey-Ale.
13- Miniature Irish Poet Honey-Ale.
14- Martha Washington's Executive Assistant Honey-Ale.
15- Bankrupt Plumber Honey-Ale.

and last but not least:

16- O'Beez Raw Honey-Ale.

~~

So I decided that I can't decided!

And... I want your input!

To that end I have taken advantage of the Polling Gadget in the Sidebar.

The Poll will be open until I return from Ireland on the 22nd of October. At which time the beer should be ready for sampling to celebrate our triumphant return home!

Vote often and Vote more than once!
It's the American way!

...er... well it used to be....

(My money is on the Tired Irish Poet...)

...further proof that I am on the right track...

My friend Bob stopped into the store the other day. He brought me something he found in an old box of books: A reader from the Bronx School District during the 30s and 40s entitled "Shaun O'Day of Ireland".

If you look closely at the bottom of the cover
you will see the name "Bronx" scribbled on it.

I was completely enamored by it and went directly to my bedroom to read it from cover to cover as soon as I got it home. It is 192 pages long, it didn't take long, but here's what happened:

~~

The book was written Madeline Brandeis, it was part of a series about children of the world; a mixture of History, Geography and in this case Irish-social-faerie-tale-myth and... Superstition (...the reason why the Irish dressed their young boys in petticoats: so the leprechauns wouldn't steel them away and force them into servitude as apprentice cobblers...) etc.

"Chure-an-its-grand-fun!"

The Title Page.

It was published by Grosset & Dunlap by arrangement with A Flanagan Company and the copy I have here was reprinted at the beginning of WWII??? I'm a little confused here because the copy write page says this:

And yet it states that it was produced under War Time Conditions on the title page:

It was published in New York and I am assuming that this is a second printing, but we didn't enter WWII until Dec., 7th, 1941 right?

Maybe it was republished during WWII or it's just my "American naiveté" ...was there another War going on that I missed?

~~

Madeline Brandeis was also a Producer of Motion Pictures based on this series of books for Pathé Exchange, Inc. Her photographs which illustrate the book are peopled by Child Actors who were famous in movies such as: "The Iron Mask" with Douglas Fairbanks and "The Bridge at San Louis Rey". The only adult Actress is played by "...such a busy Star..." Miss Alice White??? Apparently she was Warner Brothers answer to Clara Bow...

~~

THIS IS GREAT STUFF! Here is a copy of her preface:

I love that she names her Camera "Ref".

~~

In her introduction in which she gives credit to all her actor's; she even gives credit to the buildings:

She must have been there in the Fall as I will soon be ;)

Even MORE Rain references....
(..rain fairies...who would believe in them...)

~~

One of the things that really struck me were these paragraphs:

Awww Mush! Alright, I admit it, I'm a fool for this because my Girlfriend's name is Dawn....

~~

BUT HERE IS THE BEST PART! The story is your typical fairytale replete with "Evil Step Mother and dieing Father" ...all very romantic and to be expected.
However, check out how the story begins:

Just the way I wrote the beginning of "O'Wasterly Gale" as posted here last February in a blog "O' Slightly more Aisterly Speculation".

The two main characters playing footsie in the sand!!!

~~

I wonder if me Da read this book when he was in school on Long Island. Maybe I had it in my genetic memory or something...

Whatever it is, I find it to be further proof that I am on the right track.

...Along the Powtomack....

"I guess I never heard of the C&O Canal along the Potomac (or "Potowmack") River or realized its strategic significance during the Civil War until I began to transcribe the portion of James Gilmour's letters that take place during the time he was stationed along the River/Canal from August of 1861 until March of 1862.

On August 11th 1861 James Gilmour wrote to his brother Robert Gilmour in Manhattan:

"Rockville Md Aug 11 th

Dear Brother I received your welcome letter

in due time which gave me welcome great pleasure

to hear that you were all in good health

we have moved our camp again we left camp

Powell on friday 9 th on our march for the

Point of Rocks we have marched on friday even

& halted after getting socking wet & lay on the

ground all night ~ we marched at 5. saterday morning

& halted for Dinner after marching over a

white flint rock from 5 to 1 o'clock we started

again at 3 & halted for the night at 7 in a wood

near the village of Rockville from which I now

write we have slept on our arms all night

under the shade of a tree with nothing but

our overcoats it rained a little but this

sunday morning is very fine ..."

Camp Powell was one of the many Union camps that ringed the Capital City. Point of Rocks is just beyond the Monocacy River and not as far along the Canal as Harpers Ferry. Rockville is very near Mechanicsville and only about one quarter of the distance between Washington and Harpers Ferry. "

~~

This is an aerial view of the Civil War encampments,
around Washington during the Civil War.
The location of Camp Powell is not distinguishable.

~~

The previous quoted text was an excerpt from a long time project that I have been working on and have as yet not published. A preview if you will, just to let everyone know I haven't been resting on my laurels....

~~

Map of the Potomac Aqueduct.

Lets face it, I'm a Map~aholic. I LOVE Maps! I have been trying to find a map of the Potomac/C&O Canal that shows all the places my ancestor James Gilmour was either stationed at, mentions having visited, or was known to have been involved in a battle/skirmish near. Some maps show some locations, but leave out others. This has to do with the strategic significance to what ever is being discussed I suppose. Never the less its frustrating!

~~

I can't make up my mind... Draw my own detailed map, or construct one on Google Maps. I think I'll do both, but it will take time with all the things I've managed to get myself involved in lately. I thought once I retired from Youth Ministry I would have more time. I should have known I wouldn't be able to say NO and would be just as busy with other things eventually.

So, I bought some very fine point pens... Some quality mapping paper... It may be a while but eventually I will post a map here following James Gilmour and the NYSM 2nd Regiment along the "Powtomack Canal" during the years 1861-62.

~~

I've found some interesting stuff along the way, but nothing all encompassing or comprehensive enough to put all of their movements and engagements into perspective. These two images came from the Library of Congress and I found them with the help of my local librarian friend: Julie Stump.

THANKS JULIE!!!

~~

Guess it's up to me. I've got the pens, I've got the paper, now all I need is to get the time...

The Google thing will have to come later. That one I can start in Killaloo and follow to every location of each family member from Londonderry to where ever... A genealogical tour map so to speak.

"SUNDAY FOUR" with featured reader Arther Willis.

Today I attended "SUNDAY FOUR" (the fourth Sunday of every month) OPEN MIC at The Old Songs building (37 South Main Street) with featured reader Arther Willis today.

As always Art impressed me and inspired me. When I returned home, I was in a meditative state induced by his poems, to find a present for me on the steps of the Laundromat I manage.

As I cleaned up the mess, I remained in the creative trance as I worked. I couldn't help but respond with what I will humbly and respectfully term: Willisian observation.

After Art read and while the Poets drank at the Pub:

I scrubbed the Sun off of the steps today because

it was being tracked into the store on the carpet.

Who ever heard of a pink Sun anyway…

A gallon of water and some pine-sol did the trick

on him and his companion as well.

A shop broom lifted them up from the cement

and made them bleed down the stairs

violet pink blood.

The carpet is old and worn,

the children were busy

and it was only chalk.

"We have some Modern Art on the steps today…"

said the landlord sarcastically.

I wouldn't have minded except I'm the janitor

and bound to clean the tired old carpet

by arrangement.

"What you do?" said the local color.

"Sweeping up the Sun…" said I.

I found this artwork of Cuchullain on Wiki and cropped it for my own purposes. The artist was noted as unknown. My actual insperation came from "The Story of the Irish Race" by Seumas MacManus. There is a nice synopses of the event and the history of Irish Poets on this Patrick O'Brien Message Board.

The Greedy Poets just-desserts:

When Conor reined in old long times

and Poets roamed the land

when sometimes came to call a man of rhyme

it was their way to command

an honor price for praise bestowed

upon the King at hand.

Cuchullain, King Conor's Foster-son

an High-One of renown

possessed the Spear of Victory

when he assumed the Crown.

That Spear was magic-gifted

an lethal when it were thrown.

So by an by Cuchullain when he was resting

at his fireside as it blazed

that Poet Redg appeared before him

chanting Poems of praise

and from his mouth came platitudes

with every turn of phrase.

When he was done Redg did demand

for his price of honor

that thing Cuchullain most did prize

and Ulster called a wonder

The Spear of Victory

from the heir of King Conor.

It were Cuchullain's enemy's

who planned the Poet's deception

that Spear's repute

was sure the Poet's intention

for they were jealous,

of the Ulster Chieftain.

Now when the Champion King

did offer Redg instead

Gold an Silver, Sheep an Cattle

every thing he bred

that conspiring Poet

would not even offer a trade!

Despaired of his honor

Cuchullain could not abide

parting with his Victory

or parting with his pride

he thrust his Spear

and at Redg he out- cried:

"Take your winnings!

You foolish conspiring man!

Go off and go back,

where ever it were you began!

You'll never get the best of me

not any of your clan!"

And so, the Poet caught

Victory with his head

a little bit surprised,

but having done so said:

"It is indeed a powerful gift

alas but now, I'm dead…"

...What I did on my summer vacation....

~~~
The thing we forget about genealogy is: DIEING SUCKs!
~~~

We had to put Sarah's cat down today. (Who am I kidding, she slept on my shoulder every night...)

"Mooshee" watched me today, as she always did, making a box out on the back deck. I have been building flower boxes for years from old asparagus box staves. The descendant of Box makers and Coopers; who now believes in genetic memory.

Today I built a Coffin. (Yeah bIRD, theres the "Coffin" connection too.)

It was kinda creepy I'll admit, but she was content to be with me as always while I built it. I couldn't just dump her in a shoe box; even though my Conklins and Glenns were Shoemakers.

~~~
From now on when some one asks me for a definition for "Surreal" I will have to answer: "Calling around for price quotes to kill your cat." Unpleasant, but advisable in todays take advantage of peoples emotions to get at their wallet world. (Prices ranged from $60.00 no frills, to $259.00 private cremation and etc....)
Sarah and I brought her to a Veterinary Hospital nearby. We were able to be there to hold her paw and cry together when she passed. Then I placed her in the casket, wrapped in her bed towel and nailed the lid on. Medium price: $139.00.
~~~

We went to Mom's house and dug a grave out back under some sodded shamrocks.

After we said some prayers, we went into the house just as the sky opened up and the rain poured down in buckets of tears....

~~~
On entering the house Mom handed me a copy of the Deed for the Conklin plot that my 3rd cousin Regina sent me from Middle Village NY. Its actually a transcript dated Oct. 13th 1894, and lists married names and indicates that only my mothers mom's father had issues.
(Click for larger view)
My Conklin ancestors were printers, generation upon generation. Hmmmm, imagine that, just like I was for 14 years and just as my brother Rich is today.
~~~

The thing about death is remembering. Remembering those who lived who made us who we are. Our siblings, our forefathers and foremothers, and even our pets.

"Mooshee" 09/july/08

You loved us well.

Rest comfortably in the Lap of the Lord.

...goodbye 'ol friend...

You will be remembered!
